Sycamore on Elm Street

There is a tree under which I used to sit far away from here.
I say far because it was a long time ago.
Childhood’s ghosts and a thousand miles,
are indeed a vast distance.

I would go there, nestle between gnarled trunk and
upright, pocked telephone pole.
Sitting headbent with arms encircled around crooked knees.
Deep in an island three. Comfort was easy there.

There, my only obligation silence,  solace under the
warmth of the rising sycamore. Standing weathered and broad.
I owed no one anything, fell short of nothing, all pretense removed.
Troubles disintegrated like cracked fall leaves ground small

and fertilizing a young boy's growth.  A trees growth.
Now, in the apple of my worldliness, my ken demands a different being;
tasks to accomplish, money to make, responsibilities to oversee,
worlds to save with my pen and organization and do gooder heart.

Sometimes I wish I could go back to that tree and just
curl up snug and small.

Sometimes I do.

A Cold Roe Morning

My heart clenched as I passed by the throng.
The bitter cold air, naming my icy mood.
In their minds no doubt, or room to be wrong
where ragged edges are once again glued.

Their world of black and white, brooks no rainbow here
just entrenched certainties, and calcified thought
barricades of judgements. Forts built in fear.
I wish they could see what these patients sought.

They pray for me, and all the women within
but feels more like control than like comfort
addled by references to mortal sin
Barren words labor, but fail to comport

I’ve witnessed first hand the healers inside,
rise each morn to minister to women.
Care for her truths and hold hands at her side
They do so over and over again.

Courageous souls whose committment to dare
With great vision they strive. Do what they do
Living a world bound simply by Care.
Their actions in tenderness so true

Here then is my prayer uttered without sound
Ushered without moving, not meant to plea.
More like a remembrance, that when it is found
Brings the heart home to love’s reality.

May each day we all hold dear, those whom we serve
Near their hearts as our own filled with this grace
Each drop the ocean, unfrozen, to swerve
Stronger Together as compassion’s face.

January 22, marks the anniversary of Roe vs Wade the landmark Supreme Court decision that gave many women in the United States the right if not the ability to bring their moral authority to bear when deciding complicated issues like abortion.

True Heroes

The bravest people I know
are not necesasrily those that burst into the fiery building
rescuing the ashen fallen
though that is certainly a courage
worthy of generations' retelling.

The bravest people I know
are not always those those who hold the front line
when unceasing cannons relentlessly bombard the bunk
lighting it up with acrid smoke and blaze
as grateful as I am for their selfless Spartan safeguarding of the land.

You may even think the bravest people I know
are those who speak their mind with authority.
Convincing all of their principled path.
Moving people to fall behind their freedom's ways
And that too has its important and honored place,

But to me the bravest people of all
are those, who often unsung, live
unprotected, unguarded and authentic,
Ever simply open.  Asking for and giving the love for which this
world so desperately hungers.

Theirs is the most rare courage of all.
They are the true heroes.

Sound of Silence

It's noisy.

colors, sounds, smells, thoughts.

so many, many thoughts.

It's easy to get jumbled in the noise,

the real music though is quiet.

It's the bass that gives it a foundation, life.

The silence that spawns all.

The emptiness between the clutter

and which even so, holds the clutter too.

We get so drawn to the noise

we forget that which never needs to sound off'

to communicate.

The one and only thing that matters.

Listen for it.

Life's Stream

Life is not here to  teach you a lesson

It is not here to serve you at all,

though indeed it does, it has and always will.

They say "find the silver lining in the clouds"

but that presupposes that silver is a commodity worth having

and that you aren't the sky already.

In the end life moves, it flows, it jumps, it grooves,

it jams, it tangos, it plods, its slithers, it whizzes, it streams.

The question is -- will you be its partner?

Remembering the Sacred

Don’t ever think for a second that this isn’t sacrosanct.
Your enlightened engagement is the source itself in operation.
The wearied woman who comes through these doors weighing the world in her heart,
the frightened maturing girl clasping a mother’s warm hand secretly in her woolen, winter layers, as
they wait in still silence;
as if holding tightly enough will restrain time’s indomitable succession.

When the director pulls off her glasses and rubs her eyes with the fleshy heel of her palms,
she pretends that it is not a tear appearing.
So many lines of legislation,  so much judgment.
Is there any understanding left in the world?

The survivor of 40 years  irate that her down on her luck daughter, miles away,  may lose
even more than she had to years ago on a cold metal table.
As she dashes off a letter to a name in a distant capital she ponders – you represent me?

The father caught off guard by an unexpected question come too early.
Frantically charting the internet, determined to get right what no one did for him.
Do not let the shrill and strident clamoring of walled off and imprisoned compassion
dissuade you from your course.

No, do not forget for a moment the hands you’ve held, the minds you’ve touched, the bodies you’ve
healed, the hearts you’ve lifted.
The benediction of your daily endeavors grace the world.
If good is to happen in this world it will only be through your compassion and kindness.
If peace is to reside in this land it will need rest in your hearts.

We belong to each other in unfathomable ways.
This would not be possible without you.
We are what we have been waiting for.
We need only remember it.

A Few More Tweets

Love is for giving.  Its is ALL worth giving.

There is a silent place in all of us.  To go to there, to that still place, is to touch the real universe.

Stillness in yourself creates stillness in the world.  When you act, come from that place and witness the blossoming peace around you.

Surrender to the flow of life.  You were always being lived anyway.

Find the stillness in movement, the quiet in noise, the space in substance.  They all hold secrets.

Recognize you are the space in which all is, all happens, and act from that recognition.

The moment I try to speak truth I break a sacred covenant and yet . . .
